Comment:
I've known some of you since early grammar school but sadly for me, my parents left Northbrook to move to Lincolnwood my sophomore year. After graduating from Niles West (which I never considered "my school"), I worked a bit, got married and had my daughter, Karen. My first husband was a rocket scientist...seriously. He was an engineer and worked on the space shuttle in the early 70s and we lived in Garden Grove, CA. Karen and I moved back to Chicago when she was only 3. I began working at McGraw-Hill on Michigan Avenue, living in Lincoln Park. I met my now husband, Patrick, while he was in Chicago from New Jersey on business, and we just clicked! McGraw-Hill had been asking me to transfer to the New York office for a year. Meeting Pat, I knew that timing was everything in life. I took the transfer, we married in 1985 and have been living happily ever after for over 38 years now. My New York career included planning and executing conferences for the Chemical Process Industries Group, traveling to Milan, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Barcelona. In 1999 my group was sold to another company, and I took the offered package, retiring after almost 25 years. I continued my conference planning career at the American Institute of CPAs in NY and Jersey City, traveling within the U.S. In 2006 the AICPA management and board decided to leave the NY area to save money on taxes. Everyone that wished to could move and the city that was chosen was Durham, NC, leaving some executive personnel in NY on Sixth Avenue. Pat and I were thrilled to move and leave the commute and snow behind. My largest conference for AICPA was in Washington, DC where I organized and managed "Current SEC & PCAOB Developments" annually for 15 years. I retired in June, 2017. Daughter Karen is married to husband, B.A. and they have a son, Atticus Rocket. As you can surmise, they are quite creative. Karen is a successful Experiential/Environmental Graphic Designer working for both museums and businesses. This involves orchestration of typography, color, imagery, technology, and content to create communicate and tell stories. Some of her accolades include the design of the Clark-Devon Hardware Store clock at the corner of Devon Ave. and Clark St. in Chicago, and an exhibit on Nazi Propaganda which shown at UNESCO and the United Nations. Her biggest project was Lead Graphic Designer for the historic exhibit at the 9/11 Museum at Ground Zero, where she designed everything from artifact ids and reading rails to timelines, wall maps and diagrams. After the design phase, she oversaw the fabrication and installation of all of those elements in the exhibit. On the animal front, we became kitten/cat parents some of which were fostered, some caught fixed and released, some kept. They are a great source of amusement. Pat and I are enjoying Durham with its many great restaurants, the Durham Performing Art Center, gardening and playing golf. We also visit my family when we can. Karen lives in Evanston and my sister, Ellen (Class of '64) lives in Highland Park. Many cousins, aunts and uncle are all "still local". We try to have a Cubs family reunion every few years. We're all avid fans; it's in our genes! My grandmother used to take my mom and uncle to Wrigley on Ladies Day in the '30s! The weekend Karen married, we had 75 tickets to the Cubs game, complete with a congratulatory message on the scoreboard. And the Cubs won! |
