Hello, my GBN classmates! I have not been at a reunion since 1977, for a variety of reasons. Needless to say, I am excited to see you all! I will try to keep 50 years as compact as possible. 6 mos. after graduation, I joined the Marine Corps. I did that for 2 reasons - 1) I wanted to serve and 2) I wanted the GI Bill to pay for college. While I was in the USMC I met my first husband Donald, who was also a Marine. I left the Marines when my enlistment was up in 1971. I moved back to Northbrook and lived with my folks because Don was in Okinawa on an "unaccompanied" tour. When he returned we lived in North Carolina for 4 years where I started college. Then he was transferred to Beaufort, South Carolina where our son Timothy was born and I transferred to another college. After the birth of our son, I made the decision to leave Don and move back to Northbrook with Tim and finish my degree in Recreation Administration at George Williams College in Downers Grove. (Of course it is now gone) I graduated in December of 1979 and immediately started working at the North Suburban YMCA. Worked there for 4 years before transferring to a the Old Colony YMCA in Brockton, MA. While in MA, I met my now husband, Lou. We have been married for 32 years. He wanted to finish his degree in pastoral ministry and we decided to move from MA to Virginia Beach, VA to do that at Regent University in 1988. However, he never went that route and instead followed his bachelor's degree in teaching. First getting his Master's and then he got his Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Gifted Education at Willliam & Mary. When we left MA I was not able to get a job back in the YMCA until 6 years later after getting my Master's in Child Care Administration with a minor in Early Childhood Education. I started working for the YMCA of South Hampton Roads in 1991 and retired from that YMCA in 2012. My biggest accomplishment while working there was running two grants for 1008 "at risk" 4-year-olds in 2 cities with a total of 57 classrooms that had one teacher and one assistant in each of those classrooms. Those 2 grants totalled $6,000,000 every year. It was extremely challenging and rewarding! We are continuing to follow Lou's career which took us out of VA to TX in December of 2014. Yes, we are now Texans. Our son, Tim finally married for the first time a year ago and he lives with his wife in Bristow, VA. She works for United Airlines and he works for Amazon on the security side. We are now waiting for grandchildren! God had been so good to us and it has been an amazing journey. I know you all have similar stories. |
